Description
The Carnegie Hall Afrofuturism Festival celebrated artists across mediums rooted in the cultural histories of the African diaspora—where music, visual arts, science fiction, and technology intersect to imagine alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures. Alija was one of the artists featured during this two-month celebration.
01
The digital illustration, Celestial Ancestry, is a tribute to the Dogon tribe's mythology of encountering the Nuemos, celestial beings from the Sirius B system.
02
Inspired by the AfroCosmicMelatopia prompt to imagine a future in the year 3000 where Black liberation has been achieved, Celestial Ancestry reflects on legacies of displacement and being rooted within natural and traditional ways of knowing as a form of healing.
03
Through imagining the inter-dimensionality of the African diaspora, Alija hopes to inspire a greater sense of belonging and honor the contributions the African diaspora has made within and beyond earth.
