Participatory research centering local residents that uplifted national best practices in resident-led community and economic development that the Charlottesville City Council adopted in 2016 through the Public Housing Association of Residents' proposed Vision for Redevelopment of the largest public housing neighborhood in the city.

To disrupt legacies of harm in community development, Alija interviewed stakeholders across community development nonprofits, city government officials, and local residents directly impacted by the proposed redevelopment process.

By conducting thematic analysis of interviews to identify a shared vision for success, Alija identified case studies to inform a resident-led redevelopment process that redressed the legacy harms of past neighborhood revitalization efforts.

Alija's national best practice research was adopted by the Public Housing Association of Residents and City of Charlottesville in 2016 to inform ongoing community redevelopment efforts being implemented today.
